California DMV Laws and Mature Driver Program
California DMV Laws
As we age, driving can become more challenging due to changes in vision, reaction time, and overall health. The California DMV Handbook has specific laws and requirements to ensure that older adults remain safe drivers.
- Vision Test Requirements: Drivers aged 70 and older must pass a vision test when renewing their driver’s license in person.
- Renewal Process and Frequency: Older drivers must renew their licenses in person every five years. Online renewals are not available for drivers aged 70 and older.
- Medical Reporting Requirements: Physicians are required to report any medical conditions that may impair safe driving, such as dementia or severe diabetes.
